Yesterday, I received my new Sapphire AMD R9-290 Tri-X video card. Whoa Nelly! I did a little benchmark of my own. Nothing huge, but I wanted to take advantage of video card ONLY! (cpu and mobo to come next week). Specs: AMD Phenom II 955 BE 16GB G.Skill Sniper Ram (1333) Sapphire 7850OC (and now Sapphire R9-290 Tri-X) 14.12 Omega drivers. Benchmark scenario: @ Indianopolis all by myself (again, only want gpu marks), record bench as soon as I leave the pits (yellow line), do my outlap, and one fast lap, as soon as I cross finish line, stop. 2560x1440 4xAA/8xAF HDR on. Didn't change anything as far as settings go. 7850 OC: Min-- Avg-- Max 29-- 40.550-- 51 New r9-290: Min-- Avg-- Max 167-- 211.476-- 236 So, I did NOT know what I was missing! Just messing about @ Sao Poalo, I cranked everything up to 16xAA/16xAF with 20 cars (ASR f1), and got: Min.-- Max. 108-- 166 Probably CPU limited, since min and max are so close. #####NEW UPDATE##### Ok, now that most of my PC is here (I have to run my ram at half speed and half as much, until the good stuff gets here): i7-4790K AMD R9-290 Tri-X OC 2560x1440 (1440p) @ 96hz. 8xAA/16xAF Everything maxed. Min-- Avg-- Max 69-- 90.978-- 109 Now I need a new wheel
Mine isn't the 290x. it's just the 290. But plenty fast, and will reach 290x speeds when overclocked.
Running 8gb of ram instead of 16gb dropped your min frames from 108 to 69??? That's massive and doesn't seem right.
I think he is saying that he runs his 16 GByte of ram at half of the clock speed. Still don't understand why he is doing that after executing a benchmark with full speed. Not sure what good stuff he is waiting for - maybe some cooler or heatsinks to cool the components
lol got me baffled why he ever had 16GB with a Phenom to start with. hehehe How did he mean he is running 1333MHz ram at 1/2 speed. loool I took that to mean he is getting 32GB of 2666MHz , made more sense to me. Also be aware he is using double the AA and AF on the i7 test Spin. AMD === INTEL ====
I with ya mate. loool I pretty sure he is saying he is getting 32GB of fast ram. I can't think of any reason why 16GB would not work in a Intel at 1333MHz. I mean we all realize he needs new faster memory. So I am thinking he is thinking why get only 16GB when I already had 16GB for donkeys hehehe ....my warped logic
No, running half the ram AND half the speed PLUS it's a different track. The 69fps is Indy oval, the 108fps is Sao Paolo.
Running 16GB of RAM in a Phenom II is no different than running 16GB in an intel. As Photoshop and AutoCAD need huge amounts of ram. It's running half the speed, because it isn't in dual channel mode (ram slot 1 & 3, 2 & 4 run in dual channel). It isn't "ACTUALLY" running at 667Mhz, it is just in single channel mode. My ram isn't compatible with the mobo so I have to run it in single until my G.Skill Trident X gets here. I am currently running only 8GB of ram in single channel mode. With my 8GB, I have already encountered several errors where I have run out of memory, and had to kill applications until it was free. Mostly running worldbuilder with Command & Conquer. No I am getting 16GB of 2400Mhz. G.Skill Trident X. The rest is correct, my 69-109 fps is running EVERYTHING maxed out, as far as I could go with video card settings. 8xAA (supersample) and 16xAF (high quality). Also is @ 1440p.
lol MerrlinC was half right after all. SDR never dawned on me. But I was almost right on speed he was buying hehehe
So we are all half right - does this mean, because we are 3 people that we, together now are 150 % right
RAM Cost Sorry if a bit late in reply, only just came across this thread... Don't waste your money on 2400Mhz ram! In games and just about any application you will run on when desktop computing you will barely see any difference in performance going from 1333Mhz to xxxxMhz ram, even when you oc both your gpu (I've got the same, very nice card) and your beast of a cpu. You are better off going for lowest possible cas latency, sitting around c8-9 is pretty much standard, whilst pushing for max Mhz rating you can find (Most ram manufacturers seem pretty good these days, not much difference other than price really. The Mhz rating of ram is how much bandwidth the ram has to offer, cas latency is how fast the ram can compute data.
