Nope, the new shader was just to blend some grass materials better, bump/specular maps are nothing new. Speaking of grass, it would be interesting to see 3D grass one day as in other new sims.
It will make a huge difference in immersion as the current system really stands out. New trackside shaders plus this will hopefully help the immersion! One step at a time but at least it's going forward.
What do you mean as 3d grass? polygons with alpha? Ive seen some tracks using it, as mentioned Mid Ohio, and i have seen some small patches on i think Indy. But doing full blown lawns from it probably isnt the best idea on DX9, with DX11 and its instancing it would probably be for the high end PCs only anyway.
Right, some very advanced 3D grass would probably not be possible with current engine. But 3D grass as in what AC, pCars and even Reiza lately use with their old game engine. I'm not expert on editing tracks, but one of FSR league track modders made some work on this with rF2, I would say result is pretty good. No FPS hit basically from this type of grass.
