    this is a guide to make skins for rfactor 2,and other games( the naming of the dds files is nto the same in other games but the rest is this tuturial you can use for other games, this should work in 2.8.6, i don't know about older versions.
    link for Tuturial http://mtbboy1993.blogspot.no/2013/11/how-to-make-skins-for-rfactor-2-adn.html

    car body skin: BC3/dxt 5

    car window skins:
    use alpha exponent(DXT5)

    there are many logos found on real racing cars,
    ( this will be updated when i find more logos)
    sponsor logos pack https://mtbboy1993.wordpress.com/2015/04/06/sponsor-logonumberplatenumberspattern-pack/
    as soon as i find more logos!!!!!!!!!!

    as i wrote in the tuturial :
    why the car can be totally grey:
    Do NOT celect the alpha1 then the extracted dds will be grey and will not show your skin but a grey car with no or without logos.
    make sure the flattened image is selected before extractign the image. then it will not be grey.
    i was experienting and i did this tuturial to share what i know.

    how its done in photoshop
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kH2XPCwZVY
    http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/3827-Textures-Which-compression-format-to-choose

    basicly do this just in gimp i will try to add this to my tuturial

    i will do some experimentign i will write every thing i know

    ok thanks, i did understand that wrong. now i don't get the grey car anymore. but the reflection in game never changes. it is always too much. i change anything on alpha1 but i see no change... i hope i understand correct, when i change alpha1 to black or very dark, i should get less reflections in game?
    i tried all i can see in gimp to change alpha1. i changed to colour, the opacity, made it dark and bright. it always looks the same in game...
    i am sure, there is something wrong i do, but i don't get it... i am very new to skinning and not used to gimp or anything else.
    still trying with URD Corvette template.
    maybe you know something more about it? thanks very much

    i have tested again today. tried with testversion of photoshop, there it works all perfect. i change the colour of the alpha1, the darker the alpha 1 is, less reflections i get. with complete black, there are no reflections on car.
    but when i do the same with gimp, i always have full reflections.
    then i opened the dds files with photoshop. the dds file i exported from photoshop has a dark alpha1 channel.
    the dds file i exported with gimp has always a white alpha channel, when i open it with photoshop.
    so for me it looks like gimp or dds plugin is saving s**t with alpha channel... didn't find a way to get another alpha1 into dds with gimp, it is always white, so it has always full reflections :((

    photoshop has a number of options how a dds can be saved as.
    default is: [ DXT5 ARGB 8bpp | interpolated alpha ]
    is gimp using that ?

    in the screenshot are all settings i see for exporting to dds in gimp. it is very different to nvidia plugin for photoshop...
    i have tried very much combinations in gimp, but did't get any solution....

    edit: i normaly use "BC3 / DXT5" and "generate mipmaps"
    but then, the format is not available anymore.

    I create DDS's in GIMP using the plug-in you use. I do my source work in PSP, then save as a PNG with alpha. I load that PNG into GIMP in order to export. If all goes well, your skin in GIMP will be semi-transparent based upon the alpha. Export as type DXT5, for instance, in order to save the alpha.

    thanks.
    i have downloaded testversion of paintshop pro. i will try that tomorrow. is somewhere a tutorial available how to save with alpha and how to work with psp?
    i am very new with that stuff...

    Edit: just made a quick test. Used the URD corvette template. Made it a dark car. saved as png, but didn't find anything like alpha in psp?! Opened that file with gimp, exported with dxt5 to dds and still full reflections... Do you get less reflections when using psp??

    gimp plug in v3.0.1

    BC3nm#DXT5nm=?
    uncompressed=good quality no strange lines
    i have seen popel recomending alpha exponent(dxt 5) i the rf 2 forum.
    if you skin looks hobble when you use compression oyu got outdated dds plugin.
    compression:
    ycocg(dxt5)=every thing will be blueish
    ycocg scaled(dxt5) =every thing will be geenish
    alpha exponent(BC3/dxt 5)
    formats:
    ABGR8=small file size
    RGB8=lower file size
    RGR8lower file size
    L8 = grayscale
    A8:total block dds file and yea ingame too
    L8A8=greyscale
    AExp= big file size
    ycocg=every thing will be blueish

    alpha exponent(DXT5) make windwos look like windows

    no compression and no format selected, generated mip maps selected: game does nto support it, the skin will be black,rainbowcolors,and greyscale in one.gimp too cant view it

    i downlaoded the currect dds plugin, and it works perfectly now ,
    now i am able to use BC3/dxt 5,no strange line edges!
