I'm sure there's a way to convert it to a mesh, but it seems to me to be more advantageous to just use it as snapping points for creating/moving polygons. It's a bit tedious, but you'd definitely get better control over poly sizes and where to add more polys--or just polycount in general. Or can you not even bring it in as points?

    Exactly.

I have done some research and testing of using point cloud data with rF1/rF2. You can convert point cloud to the mesh, but it's hard to control polys (polycount, size and orientation).

IMO best result is achieved if you use point cloud as a reference data for your own model, so you can accurately follow track borders etc. and you have full control over your model without sacrifying anything (because of point cloud).

    Cheers!

Yeah, there's very little sense in using straight up laser data for building tracks, there's usually just way too much information. iRacing goes on about laser scanned tracks when in reality the amount of data that's left of the laser scan is along the lines of 0.00002%. It's only a basis for doing the track mesh, though make no mistake, while you'll never have the actually accuracy of the laser scan, whatever you do use will be in the right place.

Seems like using some of these fancypants retopology tools found in some products is the best option...well, other than some specialized tools specifically made for track building of course :)

Here in Finland goverment's land survey bureau has released their point cloud data for public.

Only problem is, that resolution is too poor (10-50 cm) for track building...

    Cheers!

    10cm to 50 cm poor????

1m is enough to make a track circuit. The small details will have to be with photos and videos.

With x- and y coords, maybe yes. But when it comes to elevations and corner cambers, it's useless. You cannot make cambers and elevations accurately from incar videos (too much lens distortion and FoV problems).

Personally I favor GPS measurement database, which can give you about 1 cm accuracy. It's little bit worky, but when you got it done it will be spot on.

    Cheers!

I made a import of Point cloud from Laguna seca with maximum resolution.

I cut the points before import to get the maximum for road..

soon i post iamges from track of Laguna seca .
