WTF??? Please explain what was fanboyish in my comment mate?! I made a point that to suggest a 680 was worse than a 580 was as ridiculous as suggesting that a 7970 was less powerful than a 6970 ... That comment was about as neutral as they come!

I, like you, am currently weighing up the pros and cons of both manufacturers whilst looking for a single gpu to replace my SLI setup that frustrates me a lot of the time...

That is be, that it be. I've got my fan profile as this now, seems very good, seems to be the best of both worlds, still working on it.

Cleverleyson if you do a curve is much better, quieter at more acceptable temps. Just search web for 7970 high temps or something along them lines to find out what is acceptable.
@Spyder : yes the 680 is better than 580 for many things but the 580 is better than the 680 at others, theres plenty of test stats out there if you search hard enough, and the 7970 is better than the 6970 in every way.
I think which ever you pick 7970 or 680, both are a good choice just wait for the price cut on the 7970 in a few weeks.

Pardon me for interrupting, but is 7970 really better than 7950?

You serious Bart? I've been reading a lot of reviews and pouring over benchmarks and I've yet to see any reference to a 580 offering better performance than a 680... you've obviously found some tests I've missed so could you point me in their direction please! Thanks

Thats AMAZING memory bandwith 288GB/S. I was impressed getting 233GB/S out of my 580's. Can anyone with 680 better this score using GPU-z?

actually you can't just buy another nvidia card and run the same speed as with a triplehead2go. I own two nvidia cards and a triplehead2go. nvidia until the 600 series only ran in surround mode, not true sli with two video cards. so if you want true sli you have to use the Triplehead2go. and it's $300 US new and about $220 on Ebay used.

I don't really understand your post Kristoff, are you trying to say that SLI in surround serves no purpose other than to enable 4/5 series users to connect 3 monitors? Because that's clearly wrong. Before the recent nvidia driver update I was running sli 580s in surround but only one card was registering gpu usage, as soon as the 296 driver came out sli was fixed resulting in a huge leap in performance.

Thanks BartS, Maybe you could run 3d Mark vantage as flat out as possible and give me a score there when you get time. WOuld be good to see 580 vrs 680! I think on your CPU i will anhialate you lol!! Oh and bart, if you do, only run 1920*1080 or the highest bench mode you can. It will open your eyes to what CPU Can achieve especially on these later boards and chipsets. Youa re turly in for a treat in the future.

If you run 3dmark, make sure you register both GPU score and CPU score as i7 with 8 cores kinda fiddls the scores a bit. THe FPS scores for each f the sections will be interesting! If i get a change tonight i will run it and post.

yes that's what I'm saying Surround is Not true full sli and if you test your cards as Bart showed in the last post, you'll not get full Sli from surround. now in the new 600 series perhaps you will, but as for now in 500 and 400 series you will not.

as far as I know the 500 series is the same as the 400 series with surround. I could be wrong. but I have not heard of anyone being able to double their 3Dmark score with surround. I can double my score using the triple head in full sli mode.

Barts not running SLI so I don't think he's proved anything with regards to SLI performance!

the score will be the same with triplehead2go as it is without.

here is the score for 2 gtx 470 in surround mode no triplehead2go... 14,000 point difference.
