How are you liking the 570? And what cpu are you using? I'm running a GTX 285 and thinking of a 570 or 580 with an i7-920 @2.67. (yeah, I know) Part of me says wait for new nVidia cards, either to buy one (680?) or get a 580 a bit cheaper, the other part says to order a new card right now! lol

I have the EVGA GTX580 SC and haven't had ANY problems with rF2 and FSX with all the settings Max'd. Before that card, I had two ATI 4780x2 cards in crossfire (they were £520/each, one and a half years ago). My new GTX580 SC (just under £400), blows both of my old cards away....

Wizz, saw your post comparing your setup with your friends with a 460 and found it very informative, making me lean towards the 580 SC. With my system, I'm getting decent results, 80-100 FPS at Spa, high settings, 1980x1200, 8x AA. Unfortunately, the Meganes with traffic aren't as good, and neither is Monaco, which is making me think of a new vid card. Your comparison also sheds a little light on the fact that a strong GPU makes a big difference in rF2. Thanks for that!

My problem was the 4850x2 and ATI ****ty support for crossfire in Skyrim, so I couldn't wait until March/April to buy the new generation card.

570 is an excellent card for 300E, but if you want to spend more go for the 7970. I bought a Gainward 570 GS, cuz it can be overclocked properly, up to a point to be faster then a stock 580.

As for the CPU, I have an i5 @ 4Ghz.

    This is a huge myth.

This article explains this misconception rather well. http://amo.net/NT/02-21-01FPS.html
It's an old article, but still applies.

I just fiddled around with Play Claw and MSI's Direct OC overlays. I ran the game very high settings and alot of AI.

rF2 ran around ~35 FPS worst
    GPU USAGE 60-75%
CPU USAGE 20-25% (never exceeded 30% apart from loading screens or main menu)

On top of that my CPU runs 95% of the time in 'power save' mode with CPU multiplier at 9, occasionally bumping to 13, might have flicked at full 22 at some point. While loading CPU is ran at full 22 multiplier mostly. So my computer does not even see any reason to sweat on the game and FPS is sub-par.

    Definitely something odd there.

    Core i5 760 @ 3,0 ghz
    Radeon HD 5870
    Win7 x64
    4 GB RAM

Good article. Always makes me laugh (cringe) when I read someone say '(insert number here) frames per second is all the eye can see'. However, now with basically 20 years of 3d gaming behind us, I can say personally that around the 60fps mark is where I see a good level of fluidity, and providing the game doesn't dip below the 50fps mark I wouldn't complain about the framerate.

As for rfactor2, I actually think the graphics look great, the shadows are a bit rough, the weather lighting changes are a little too sudden, and the ambient light under the darkest cloud is a little dim while under full sunlight it's a little bright, but apart from that it's quite impressive. I appreciate their obvious direction towards reality over wow factor. I played a bit of GT5 on the weekend, and after a spin on Monaco I went straight to RF2 and drove Monaco... then I really did appreciate the level of detail and quality in ISI's creation, when you consider that GT5 has a huge team of artists and a significantly higher budget. What RF2 is lacking at the moment is the 'polish', but god when I drive it I quickly stop caring about all that.

So I don't think the graphics need a lot more zazz, the important stuff is mostly there and that's the feeling of hammering a real car around a real strip of tarmac. I would prefer to see engine and object optimisations and I'm sure they will come along with better effects, and as for performance, I spend a fraction on my computer as I do my real car, so plunking $600 or so on a new graphics card if necessary is a drop in the ocean compared to the fun I'll get out of the game!

As someone mentioned in a previous thread, i think having the option to turn down viewing distance should help ,like it does in other games also i have noticed if i drop the opponent detail level down then the detail level on my tires seems to go down?just beta stuff really but I'm sure it will improve.

After a lot of fiddling with settings I finally found the most gain in the FPS count by turning Mirrors to Off. I use the look back button anyway and now I can have everything on highest settings although I still have environmental reflections to Off as suggested by Scott.

I expect once everything is optimised and SLI is working that I will then turn Mirrors back on just for the hell of it.

    cheers :)

Perhaps you better look at a PS3 and GT5 then...Jorge, PS3's and joypads are cheap. You must either be an ignorant person, or someone with a grudge against life. I probably don't have anymore money than you, I just take my sim racing hobby serious and if that means saving and getting the parts I need, then I will, but not before my family have what they need first...

Get a life Jorge and have something constructive to say, you never know, you might just come up with something that people want to hear.

I'm dizzy from all the pseudo-scientific handwaving. I don't see where this guy successfully argues his case at all, and his understanding of human vision is vague at best.

Not that I disagree with the original assertion that the eye can discern higher flicker rates than 30 Hz! But based on about 35 years of using computers with video displays, I haven't seen much advantage in going over 70-80 Hz on a properly timed CRT video display. Modern LCDs are actually even more forgiving of low refresh rates because they don't jitter during field transitions, and always generate the pixels in the same place repeatedly. The "motion blur" effect he cites (he was trying to say "persistence of vision" but didn't; there is no motion blur in a properly-working film projector) is actually a detriment to detecting higher frame rates, not an advantage. No matter whether you're looking at a CRT, LCD, or real life, your eyes are always limited by that persistence of vision (the time it takes for the photopsin levels to change enough to trigger a signal to the optic nerve). LCDs actually have some inherent linear motion blur whereas CRTs do not, so technically (according to that article) they should be ideal.

Bottom line, though: There's a lot more to motion image quality than just FPS. Our eyes do take cues from color shifts, shadows, reflections, etc. and it looks like ISI is aware of this as they continue to optimize the graphics engine.

Hi Nizmo, i have a I7-920 and i think it is a good cpu but now i find the upgrade path is very limited. At the time i bought it i thought that socket 1366 was going to be the norm, well obviously not..........i should have done more homework or waited. I would like to upgrade and at the moment i could get a I7-960 running at 3.2ghz for around 300 bucks but cant afford it right now.

I think the better choice for cpu would be a I7-2600k or 2700k, as they are for socket 1155 which seems to have a lot more cpu's being made for it and would cost around the same as a I7-920 and motherboard anyway. Also i havent seen a I7-920 for sale for a while.....are you still able to get them.

quad core 9550 intel with 32 windows 3.4 gb ram 1tb hardrive antec case and 24 inch pc screen not a 50" tv or 30 inch tv as with any games running big screens u will lose image quailty but sayying that thats y u buy pc screens. the reson why im sayying this is that they are designed for it u no the sayying big is not always the best. Also my gtx560 ti is wicked on graphics side of things. in game i have this hdr on with all settings on high and and all belwo setting set to on in game settings. At monaco with 8 or so cars on in the rain cockpit view i get no lower then 55 frames and as i was told years ago if u get over 40 plus u are doing fine y because we all can only c 30fps with what god gave us plus for rf1 or rf2 anything above that is great but having 200 frames means **** just look for smove play or buy new pc and smaller screens if u do have a 50 inch SLI OR CROSSFIRE DEPPPENDS ON CARD BRAND STYLE U NEED TO RUN its the only way around it no point having a 50 inch tv screen when its a tv not a pc screen even if it has a pc slot hmi its all incorrect cheak real tv pec and look at hd pc screensand they rip tv specs in hd for donkeys so if u using a tv screen as a screen on pc u will lose some quailty trust me on that and if u running a pc build that is like 3 to 4 year old then u are due for new pc mine is two year old now im due for a upgrade sandybridge setup here i come.

Please cut the crap about framerates and human vision pls.
Back in '99 i did a blind test on my 22" iiyama CRT, it could run up to 180hz
The blind test had quake running on different refresh rates, from 60 to 180, the pc was good enough to push a constant 300fps and i was pretty damn good in quake at the time, the mission was simple kill the very same bot with a railgun, playtime was fixed, we did test every refresh rate with and without vsync. The result was measures by accuracy AND by our objective scoring of smoothness.

Every single time the vsync on setting had better smoothness score and worst accuracy (input lag!)
The higher the refresh rate was (without vsync) the better the accuracy got and every single one of us scored best with the 180hz and the both the score and accuracy got lower when we lowered the refresh rate. Testers gone as far as calling the 60hz and 75hz displays unplayable. At 120hz things got much smoother.

After the blind test was done and we discussed our findings, we did another test, this time we had to guess the refresh rate, and we could actually tell the 180hz rate in less then 10s.

Human eye see waves of light, not frames.
Yes vsynced 60hz is pretty smooth...but for some reason it is still a lag monster, so you have to go vsnyc off for fast paced games where you need control. To get a kind of smooth vsync off computer image with least possible tearing you need 120-180fps, but never below 100fps, but god i haven't seen 100fps with my 2500K@4.5Ghz+5870 in rF2 yet.
I'd love to give rF2 a honest try and i think i could help development in some ways, but...i can not stand the framerates i have so i pushed the request refund button, but i'll be back once things are optimised.

BTW me and some local guys have done some testing and it seems that the problem is two fold.
Optimisation is an issue in general, but nvidia cards of the same price range perform 50-100% better at the moment (in rF2) and i am not an nvidia fanboy (last 2 nvidia cars broke while using ISI engine, and i have ATI every since)

For those who say THIS gfx is next gen...you must be blind or insane. It is ~2008 graphics with 2015 requirements to run it smoothly.

This is how a PC racing title based on rF1 looked like in 2009:
