Hello sim racers - it's time for another 'Spotlight On' feature, and the subject of our attention today is the mighty McLaren Ford MP4/8, the final car to carry Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna to victory in Formula One. Read up on the details here: https://www.studio-397.com/2022/04/spotlight-on-the-mclaren-mp4-8/
Nice story nice car. Ayrton is still the King. No one will ever reach their limit. I'm a bit surprised by Ron's statement. Wasn't the MP4/13 the best car McLaren built under Adrian Newey?
(just being an a$$, warning you in advance) The car was almost completely automatic. So if you want to drive the car like Ayrton drove it...you should welcome the intervention. Now, can we get a shift box for the Schumie years where one click brought you from 7th to 2nd...???
For me one of the most beautiful F1 cars ever build. Only 505kg light, compact. Not comparable to the 800+ kg "busses" they use nowadays.
there was also a system where the car was fully auto on the way up but manually flappy paddled on the way down.
I tried this car out at Donington based on a post over at RD. Here is video of Senna's first lap at that track in 1993: https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1513378447854239747 I see the traction control in the setup menu along with the auto shift, but when I try launch control in the car I get: "Launch control is not available on this vehicle". Also, now that S397 has a relationship with Goodyear, it would be nice if this car (along with some others, like the SC2018/X) could be updated with Goodyear markings on the tire sidewalls, instead of "Roening".
Traction control is not Launch Control. I don't know if LC was allowed by the rules. Somebody else may have a better memory of that era. edit Yup, the boys below are correct, all I had to do was read the full press release...from the Blog by Paul, Additionally, in order to help boost the chances of success against the mighty Williams Renaults of Alain Prost and Damon Hill, the new for 1993 car would also include technical innovations such as active ride suspension (used to devastating effect by Williams since 1991), traction control and launch control, created in conjunction with the renowned Techniques d’Avant, TAG.
ABS, TC, launch control, active suspension and so on was allowed. At some point Williams tested a CVT gearbox in the FW15. The only guy how ran with an illegal car in that era was Schumacher in the 94's, the Benetton was more dirty than a potato.
I think that the MP4-8 had clutch pedal and the MP4-9 had "hand clutch", but i'm not sure if this worked as a Launch Control
Since paul mentioned the word "V12" in this blog ... i'm taking that as a hint for Q2 MAY content. Also whats better engine than a V12 to showcase RF2 new sound engine ? that's right none.
