    Hi everyone,

More questions o_O I want to add crowds to the track.....but have no idea how.

Can I import a large group or do I have to do 1 and then duplicate?

Again, thanks in advance for the help.

    Mike

If you want, i can send you a 3DSMax 2012 Scene with Billboard Crowds that i have made a long Time ago.
But it could last 1 or 2 Days, because the File is on an old HDD, where i have some more from.
So the search will last a While.

That would be really cool, thank you.

I had a go at using 3DSimEd, it works of course but there is no way to move each person to the terrain.....it does the whole group.

I love S397....but they really need to have some decent tutorials and example files. It would make life a lot easier for us.

Thank you for your help :D

    You're welcome. :)
I was lucky and did find the Scene File on the first checked HDD.
So here it is (3DSMax Scene and exported rF2 gmt with Textures).
It uses the Joesville Textures, that are not the best. ;)
    Billboard is working.

That is great, thank you. I opened your file and exported it works.
I opened your *max file, exported into Gnoo Blas and it worked when I opened it with 3DSimEd.

What I need to understand is how to set up the polys in max so they pivot like yours. I think I am not getting how to set up the individual polys so when exported they pivot like yours. I have searched these forums and so many links are now dead and the images done.

Hoping you can help. I am sure others have the same issue.

**The other thing i can do is import my terrain mesh into your max scene and do crowds that way.....too tired now lol. I will try that tomorrow.

Good that i can do some other Things, besides of watching Moto GP. :D
Here is a short Description about what to do, to get a BB Mesh.
I have made it in this Way, to see if i remembered it correctly. :)
    - Create a Plane with 1 Poly.
    - Rotate it in that Way, that the Vertices, if the Normals point to you, are positioned like in this Picture:
    BBVertex.jpg

    Do reset XForm.
To have a good Base Mesh, i have positioned it in that Way, that the Bottom Polys are at Height Level 0.
Then i have centered the Pivot to the Object and moved it to Height 0 too.
The i have moved the Mesh to 0,0,0, that the Pivot Point is also at 0,0,0.
Now select the Poly and in the Rollout, give it an Alpha of 99,9:
    BBAlpha.jpg

Now you only have to set the exporter.
Check the BB Checkbox and click the Button where the Pivot is at the Bottoms Center:
    BBexport.jpg
    Export the Mesh.
    It should work now.

Hey redapg....I got it working. Maybe not the best way...but it works.

    1. Use a script that explodes the crowd into separate objects. So now each person is obj001, obj002 etc.
    2. I then imported my terrain .3ds files into your original max file.
    3. I moved a few to where I want them on the terrain.
    4. I used another script, Move to Surface, and tested on 3 people. Each individually moved the the terrain! :D:D
    5. Then attach those three into one object, rename to crowd_test01. Export and it works! Billboard people.

Here is a couple of screen shots.

I will do more tomorrow. Totally exhausted now lol.

These are the 3 test people in the viewer.

Here is your original max file with my terrain.

I'm sure there is a scatter modifier you could use in the stack to randomise their positions on your terrain.

There almost always is more than 1 Way to reach a Target. :)
I just posted the Way to create a working BB Poly in THIS Post, because you did say
"I am not getting how to set up the individual polys". ;)

You also have the object paint tab of the graphite modeling tools in max, and you can paint crowds easily with that.
