It's probably going to be either dirt on the tyres a'la AC or AMS, or it's going to be dirt buildup on the car body.

@Goanna cheers for the link and time mate, it's still not really clear whether that's something dynamic (and how it'll be dynamic, if it is), so I guess we'll wait for the tech details in a week or two.

Thats what it is. Dirt building up on track and kick up dust when cars drive over those patches.

I get the kicking up dust bit. It's the 'building up' I'm not sure about.

In the video he says Dirt Maps build up just like rain puddles. So after more and more laps dirt will end up on patches in certain areas and kick up dust when cars drive over them. Getting a feeling of the track getting dirtier over time. Awesome stuff.

Yes, but rain puddles build up with rain over time. How does the dust build up?

Im guessing from the driving itself. Sebring has these patches defined around certain places on the track and they build up over time and start showing dust when cars run over them. In reality it comes from cars going off track and going back again. Or when being pushed or when cutting corners and they drag dust in on the track. Maybe wind also on sandy areas? Not sure. But its a great feature imo. If you have tracks that are not dusty at all - dont use the feature. If you have sandy, blowy, dry tracks then add this and get sand kicking up after a while of driving.

EDIT: You could define it in areas where you know cars normally run off the track during racing. There are almost always such corners and areas where a lot of tires leave the tarmac and bring back dirt. :) They even show the dirt map when he talks about it. You can see its not everywhere. The map is white background and sandy/dirt color with areas that will kick up dust with time.

I'm not discussing whether it's a good feature or not, but at this point I don't see any clear information how it works. Above you're just taking (educated) guesses, which is cool, but all I said above is it's not clear how it works, which it's obviously not.

*We can also probably guess that it won't affect the physics, in the same way the puddles don't affect physics (yet).

You got me there. Its an educated guess on how it builds up. Im waiting to be disproved. Personally i think its defined areas and they build up over time (laps made/number of cars).

I didn't realise dust built up on track, I thought it would get cleaned up as cars continually drive over it. If someone does kick up dust on track it usually slowly cleans up as it is driven over.

If it works like the puddle map, then dirt would slowly build up on pre-specified places according to how the dirt texture is painted. Just my understanding based on what Marcel showed in the video.
