I'm getting terrible frame rates, I'm lucky to get 30fps with triple monitor. I have a GTX970 and i5-2400 cpu. Any suggestions?

cpu might not be strong enough for triples and rF2. It computes a massive amount of physics data compared to other sims and so even if other products work well, your system may not be stout enough for rF2. Check the settings for low detail that are available at the start of...I think the GT3 thread. Check if you have PCIe 2.0 or 3.0 front side bus.[it's part of your motherboard design.] GPU-z is a small utility that can find that information for you. Good luck.

i5-2400 does not support PCIe 3.0

MSI Afterburner shows very low CPU usage (20-25%) while racing. Is the physics computed by the CPU or GPU?
    I have two computers:
    1. a dedicated computer for my sim racing, with GTX970 and i5-2400
    2. my main computer, with a GTX1070 and i7-6700k.

    The GTX970 i showing x8 2.0
    The GTX1070 is showing x16 3.0

The second machine is probably a better fit for rF2. There appear to be several bottlenecks with hardware and rF2. S397 has been working to optimize dx11 further AND understand why the PCIe is so critical to rF2's fps.

CPU must also support PCIe 3.0 ;)

A big thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I managed to get the GTX970 running at PCIe x16 2.0 (by disabling USB 3.0 Turbo on the motherboard) but it only made a slight difference. I'm getting about 30fps now.

I decided to do some further testing.
    GTX970 running 5760x1080 = 30fps
    GTX970 running 1920x1080 = 60fps
    GTX1070 running 1920x1080 = 129fps
    GTX1070 running 5760x1080 = TBC (hopefully 60fps)

Looking at the numbers above I'll most likely be swapping out the current sim computer with my main computer.

Okay it looks like the change to PCIe x16 2.0 has actually helped somewhat. I just turned down some settings from Max to High and also turned off all PP effects and I'm getting over 60fps with the GTX970 running at 5760x1080.

Would it be worth swapping out my computers just to have the PP effects enabled?

lol, you are dreaming, running in max settings with your specs and have a fluid experience at same time? not possible. i'he an i5 4690 and GTX970, in SINGLE monitor, and use medium settings to keep above 60 fps in rain and 20 cars on the track.

Yep, hence the reason why I'll probably end up swapping to my GTX1070 and i7-6700k.

Does anyone know why rF2 is so badly optimised? Are the devs working on it?

And are the PP effects worth the hit in performance? I.e. should I turn down some other settings so I can enable some PP effects?

the team that originally coded rF2 were more tech-heads and I think they wanted to push the envelope with the physics. To do that, they had to limit the graphics to dx9 even though dx11 was just becoming available. For what-ever reason, the design choices made by the original group... ISI.... caused this bottleneck. Since they stayed at DX9, the huge demands on throughput were somewhat reduced. Once S397 made the decision to upgrade the graphic engine and begin exploring dx11 graphics, the slowdown in performance became more apparent. S397 has acknowledged there are performance issues and that they are investigating the causes, but no timetable has been given for improvements, if any.

But optimisation has occurred steadily and will continue to do so .. it’s perfectly useable as is and it’s only going to get better .
