It's obvious that the goal of studio397 now is to build the competiton model with paid content, similar to iRacing, so following this model, definitely is not a good idea to every year build a new title, makes much more sense to keep improving the same title.

And i think this it is the way to go too, because iRacing doesn't have a competitior yet.

Not to splash cold water on your crowd funding idea, but there is one roadblock to essentially re-writing rF2 with user funds. Remember how many posts S397 received when they eliminated the online license. If you think the lifetimers howled then, imagine when S397 wants them to pay even more for a shiny update of the same game.
Now MMO's like say, the Lord of the Rings Online, kinda do this by opening up new areas periodically and charging for some of those new regions, sometimes charging far more than the original game. (before it converted to Free to Play that is) To be comparable, rf2+ would have to release complete carsets/drivers/tracks from a series. I can't see us being generous enough to pay the associated costs for such a project. I'd love to see full sets of cars, starting, with GT3 since we have the beginnings of a carset there.
But there are so many parts of rF2, I could list dozens of additions/updates that I'd love to see just as much as a fully sorted series.

Yeah people piss and moan now that rf2 hasn't got this that or the third but then moan when s307 charge £5 for a car or 15 for a pack that's desperately needed.
S397 have to focus on getting new members as quite a few old timers will never be happy no matter what they do

The price of PC2 shows that dropping prices for rF2 was certainly a suicide. When it goes on sale it even loses more money.

There is only a reason to drop price. The product is not selling as expected. According to steam spy stats it would seem owners data number only grows at those sales periods.

In one weekend PC2 has sold nearly as many copies as rF2 at a 60€ price. How is rF2 to compete against this if it doesn't even rely on its own possibilities?

I would be carefull to draw any conclusions based on price development. Sure, rF2 is much more of a niche product to say it mildely compared to PCars, wich tries to play with the big boys, but to conclude that prices have dropped because the product is not selling well is quite short sighted and it is only one part of the equation. Currently rF2 costs as much as PCars on steam, with the first being sold basicly only a handfull of times where the latter got sold over 1Mio times on different platforms. Dropping the price of a product after 5 years isn't something unusual. Who would buy the game for 60 bucks anyway right now? Who are you going to race against? The guys in the rF3 threat telling that it is doomsday for rF2 and who are hyped by their first impression of PCars 2 - an impression that'll wear off pretty fast going by the first iteration of that franchise, or are you going to race against potential new users who get drawn in by improvements to the sim, who are looking for a sandbox experience (a big plus in my book) and who will have a relatively low entry fee? What people need to understand is, that PCars is a completely different product aiming towards a different market, simply trying to snatch up the few simracers along the way, where rF2 is tailored towards a different user base - it will never be anywhere near PCars and anyone who things that a very technicaly complex sim will sell millions of copies is just deluted. It is like comparing ArmA III with CoD or Battlefield.

The first reaction I read the last couple of days is, that PC2 is fun. That's how I percieved the first title aswell, but the question is if it will offer that kind of depth that rF2 has, after 5 years. My guess is, that most of you guys will have forgotten about PCars 2 at that time, playing PCars 3. With rF2 it is a bit different. It could be very well possible that we will still play it, just because for the simple reason that S397 have a longterm plan with it. Maybe it is the next iRacing, who knows ;)

Pretty much this, and there is a huge grey area to be explored with rF2 due to its modding nature (like an outside store you can use Steam to pay for high quality 3PA projects such as URD, call Apex to complete the GT3 grid, some track modders, etc, all content appear in game locked so people see they exist and when they click they go to that store, I think this way you wont have rF2 taken down like happened to AMS :p this is for stuff that would never be licensed), I really wish S397 would go for that, could bring tracks and cars from all over the world great quality and price despite lack licensing. For free items keep them in the workshop integrating that to the new UI
    Just my 2 cents

I agree on most things except for one detail.

You say it is normal to drop prices after 5 years. I disagree, somehow. For me it is normal to drop prices when you are not developing the game further.

If you are trying to continuosly develop the game you need continuous and regular funding.

Iracing has a yearly fee apart from DLC.

I'm wondering if s397 will put the price back up,once they have implemented most of the big features they plan too,and drawn in a lot of new members,or will they keep it low and earn mostly off dlc.

Either way they can't make everyone happy, but I don't care what they have to do to keep the doors stay open and continue to improve rf2,my wallet is always open to them until they fail to give me a game that makes me happy

IMO a continuous product development cannot be supported on DLC if content is not the missing factor in the game that people are willing to pay for. DLC should support the labour of the track team and car team. Using this to pay other developments makes them more expensive since you have to pay for licenses and modders salaries apart from dev salaries.

So far and still hopefully rF2 has been a continuously developing open platform.

IMO in an open modding platform it is wiser to release proper documentation so that quality content can be brought by 3rd party modders. Developers should be focusing on improving the simulation tool. This part cannot be performed by 3rd party modders (excluding the labour that can be done with plugins to improve game features: realtime weather plugin)

I would therefore support a yearly fee to be charged. However in order to do so it is necessary to be talking about something different to rF2. Something needs to be started over.

There are different ways to fund further development. We've seen one in form of DLCs and I suspect that we will see more of that for sure. Another way might be to lisence the engine in the future, something that ISI has done for years with their older engine. Btw, I just checked it and AC costs as much as rF2 and is still in development, so the lower price is not a necessarily something that determines if a product has to be in development or not. The most important reason why they dropped the price for rF2 is that the game was much more expensive than lets say AC, AMS or PCars at that time. Now it is inline with the rest of the products and I suspect once more DLCs come into play the price might drop even more. But that is just a guess and wild speculation. Could very well be that they go the Raceroom route one day. As some Team Fortress 2 players might know, never say never.

The big money comes from the masses. The small community that actually cares enough to post on these forums can pay three times the price sum, but it won't help S397 much. The game needs new players, not just those that buy it when it's on sale. YouTube videos and stuff like that would help marketing a lot, that would be a good start to improve the product. Something like a really well directed video showing all those new rain changes for instance. More social media content in general. The once a month roadmaps are not enough and the last few roadmaps felt like they were quickly put together, just showing one screenshot and stating that "UI is being worked on" is not good enough IMO. Share more screenshots, videos and future plans in the roadmaps and social media if possible.

I can only agree on that. Maybe some dev blogs or behind-the-scenes would be nice. They are generaly very well recieved, not only for games but also for mods. The sim expo stuff shows that pretty well. Lots of footage or screenshots are in general more interesting for the users or potential new customers. What I also would like to see are more teaser trailers for upcoming content, like AC is doing it. The 650 trailer is a good step in that direction, but the sim could def. use more of it.

That sound like a pretty good idea. Can we donate money for that?

I'd pay $20 for a DLC pack ISI promised for Indycar, but include the 2018 Dallara!

This would be complete suicide for rf2. All games and all mmorpgs too are moving away from subscriptions towards free2play in one way or other. Subscriptions is a dying business model. And we have already seen the destruction that can be caused by something like online subscription. The online is dead because of it and who knows how many people left because of it and are never coming back. And if you are going to make subscription based sim you will have to go and compete directly against iracing. People may buy multiple sims but people won't be buying multiple subscriptions to different games.

Dlc and sales is what keeps the boat afloat. But for that to work rf2 needs more people. To get more people rf2 needs to become a better sim. Apart from the driving physics everything else is behind the competition. In some cases the difference is huge.

If you want to donate money to 397 you can buy more licenses.

In the end it is too late for rf3 I think. If rf3 was an option then 397 should have gone that route as soon as they bought rf2 from isi. The best thing about rf3 would have been that it would have given chance for 397 to fix all the fundamental issues with rf2 without having to worry about backwards compatibility. The bad side is the loss of licenses and having to rework lots of content although they seem to be doing it/have done that already. How much were those licenses worth anyways?

So Iracing's subscription model is condemned to die according your theory? I disagree and I don't know many other games that use a continuous development model that you can compare to rF2.

RF3 is not even vaporware and you are already 2 pages into it. adding a +1 to a name, does not make new features that would justify it. If they would have done that, you would blame them for stealing your money twice to sell you the same product again.

I have to agree that subscriptions would annoy me very much. But if there were a list of all the near future plans S397 are working on. I would just like a chance to vote with my wallet for my favorite one. What would it hurt? If no one but me gives anything they at least got that.

    They deserve it!!:)

Maybe S397 could consider tasteful videos as a payment, which I agree helps get more sales. Heck..... It was the first Project Cars' trailers that got me all fired up to buy a gaming computer in the first place, which in turn lead me here.

Also just want to say the rain video looks great guys!! Can't wait!!:)

If you're reading this? I'm sure you are all too busy?

What ever happens, I'm here.... rFactor2 or 3.:)

RF2 is my fave sim by far but in some aspects it's so outdated that it pains me.
It doesn't matter how much they try to change the UI, it will still be one of the least friendly in the market. Even though there's been comments about licenses renewal issues and stuff, I wish Studio 397 would've just started fresh with RF3.

Not to the mention the fact that I've already mentioned in the past about RF2 being so mature and with so much 3rd party content that won't get updated to DX11 standards, half the mods out there will be useless once they stop supporting DX9.
