Buying features as dlc would be horrible system. Imagine you buy a racing sim for 10€. Want to calibrate your controls? 5€. More detailed ffb options? Another 5€. Base game comes with no content or modding. Modding support (ability to install mods) is 5€ for cars, 5€ for tracks, 5€ for skins and 5€ for plugins and other addons. Want to run tripple screens? 5€. Shifter support 5€. Ai 5€, online 5€, ability to host online race 5€. Car setup functionality 5€. Sound 5€. Replays 5€. Screenshot functionality 5€. Physics support for aerodynamics 5€. Brake heat 5€. Tire wear 5€. Lap time display5€. Forum access 5€. Ability to read release notes 5€. Telemetry ouput 5€. Vr 5€. Each isi/397 car and track is 5€ individually or 10€ for 3 items. Online player cap 10 people: 5€, online player cap 20 people: 10€, online player cap 30 people: 15€. And you need the same set of addons as everybody else to race online with other people. What could go wrong? In the end you are getting less but need to pay more.

Well, that was more of a joke. But seriously selling features does have some pretty big downsides. The obvious one is that trying to keep such a game working would be huge pain in the ass. You'd end up with unlimited number of different ways to install the game and trying to make all of those individual feature addons and all possible configurations work with or without some, none or all of the other addons. And you can not just add a vr featureset as an addon because all other parts of the game need to be checked so other things work with the vr addon andthe vr addon works with everything else. It would be a code nightmare. And how do you deal with people wanting to race together but all having one or two or 7 different feature dlcs installed?

And where would you draw the line anyways. What is base game feature and what is a paid addon? Let's take one example. Modding tools. Do you think it is a good idea to put a paywall there so the users who create additional content for your game need to pay before being able to contribute? Putting a price on every item and selling them does not mean the product becomes any better. If you just take parts out of the game and sell them as dlc... that is pretty much proven way to end up poorly.

Imo dlcs are a very good choice in assuring rfactor 2 will live on and improve. As long as dlcs are only tracks and cars. Updates should remain free unless they add something groundbraking perhaps.

just bought a fantastic chocolate donut from Lidl (best chocolate donuts ...ever) to take into starbucks for a coffee

very nice, but do you know what those cheeky blighters did ?
they wanted money in return for their donut ...then I got hit again with same thing when I lifted my coffee off the counter
    in starbucks !!!!

what's this world coming to? put an end to capitalism !
actually thinking about it lets keep capitalism as the chocolate donuts would disappear had it not be for the money exchange

I would never buy into a game where you have to buy features, that is just ridiculous. Dlc is a different story though, I would support that and have done in other sims.

So that leaves S397 with one revenue stream...shut down RF2 and start selling RF3...

:D yeah @elbo you completely missed the point there ;)

I totally agree about a "Features DLC", I think that would make it a more convoluted and essentially terrible place to be from a Users point of view. DLC for Tracks & Cars has proven to work in this genre so it's best IMO to stick to something that is known to work, rather than tread the floorboards of something that could prove disastrous.
That's not to say it won't or already hasn't happened somewhere though, I wouldn't be surprised if there's already a game or piece of software that sells "sections" of it's program, I just hope to not come across it myself any time soon.

Essentially we're all armchair business experts, we all have our guesses as to how to make money in this scene but at the end of the day S397 will work it out how to best work for them now what we want or think. As before with other titles I have no hesitation in buying DLC if I like the look of it and if it helps the Devs continue producing content whilst working on the base game for the future then that's all good in my eyes, but turn it into a "DLC for proper FFB" scenario and I'm out!

I think paid DLC to be effective means for the future of rFactor2 and S397.
In addition, even a person hesitating about the purchase of paid Mod may buy DLC because constant quality is guaranteed.

    sorry. my bad english.

Can we move on with the other things on the roadmap?
Have you seen those widgets and screenshots of the new gui?
    Looks promising:

Cant wait to finally have some modern gui and overlays and get rid of those 90s pixelated bad scalable graphics.
Tire-Modell improvements are also interesting - more information please.

There was no scandal for the Time Trial Challenge by Reiza with Automobilista, some rounds required DLCs. Honestly i don't understand where the problem is.
I can't wait for the McLaren, Zandvoort and the new UI, Studio397 is doing an amazing job!

There is a difference between a market economy and capitalism. You can have a market economy with money changing hands without capitalists exploiting usury and wage exploitation. Just sayin' ;)

I like/dislike DLC and understand both sides of that argument. Since I cannot drive, drift or race either point of view/argument I do not get involved. I do, however, think other companies should sell DLC for rF2 right along with whatever is planned. There are original tracks and cars from other titles that would be beyond awesome if it were in rF2. This would not be a bad idea if reversed as it would be interesting to drive Sardian Heights in AC for example. There are non-traditional driving/racing titles that have tracks and roads and short highways, the possibilities are staggering. As for this new car, I think it might be fun to start a little friendly rivalry. Please make that McRacecar bigger than normal since I will only see it in the D4's rearview. It might look as pretty as the Radicals do from that angle. I'm kidding, it's all one big hug and a smile.

They still gonna keep the graph for the gears? Sticking a bunch of numbers in front of me means bugger all no matter how modern the gui is lol

@jpalesi What an announcment... New "irF2" business model... too cool for the fan's!

@Others Please, don't take this post too seriously... just having fun reading the thread, about "Phy...nancial simulator".

By the way, does rf1 have needed dlc's to have good content (Cars, Tracks, Plugins)!?!
