What have you previously said about VR? I'm curious If you can get a cheap DK2 I'd say go for it, but just take into account the visuals are going to be quite bad (although I could drive just fine with it in AC 2 years ago) Can't wait for the patch
Well, you'll get for $200 worth of VR, but go for it, tesr it, pass it on if not happy with it. Should be compatible.
Especially the optics. The new consumer HMDs have much larger sweet spots that give you a much larger area of clear focus. The DK2 really only has has a very narrow cone where things are in focus.
You should be able to rent one for a week, some where around you probably offers that service. $200 is a lot for something that isn't as good as the current stuff and might not work on any particular new driver release from oculus. It will give you a taste of VR but not for what the current headsets are like.
On the other side DK2 lenses don't produce god rays (which i really hate). But I don't know if IPD adjustment still works well with DK2s. I would google that or ask someone with a DK2, before I would buy me a DK2. if it doesn't work well you will have problems when your eye distance is far off the default IPD of 64 mm.
The lense adaptors just adjusted the sweet spot for various IPD's. If you can't control the IPD with software to match then it's still an issue. I am not sure if teh injectors still work with the latest drivers?
I had a DK2 for 2 years and loved it. You're right, no glare, which I was really disappointed with CV1. I still have one and tempted to use it. It not that bad, I remember.
Great news! We are already driving in VR – seeing a virtual sun rise through the trees is an incredible experience! Our VR implementation is based on OpenVR. We chose OpenVR for its support of both headsets – the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift – ensuring future compatibility. To complete the experience, we are integrating VR with the new UI and adjusting several other parts of the game, such as external cameras. Thats from the March road map. is OpenVR the same as OSVR?
Regarding DK2 use; there is a SDK hack for IPD adjustment but, if your personal IPD is 64mm (average) or very close, then it should work. The DK2 came with 2 sets of lenses - depending on user vision, one lens or the other can accommodate most users. I know the Lens issues (God Rays) bother some CV-1 users but, they tend to not be much of an issue during play in daylight game environments; it's mostly noticeable when you have white text with black backgrounds where it really stands out; I find the rest to be easy to get past. The remaining differences between HMD's are mostly in favor of the CV-1 IMO.
Cost and comfort I assume? Vive wins in larger FOV and brightness. I'm only pointing this out because I think it's helpful when someone says one is generally better than the other. This is objectively false. There is no clear cut, superior choice.
I said I wouldn't spend the money for VR due to price, not that I can't but for the time I would actually get to use it it wouldn't be worth it. But, I currently came across a oculus dk2 I grabbed for $200 which is a fair amount IMO to try it out. I'm sure if it's not up to par for my likings I could always sell it for more than I purchased it for. But for $200 couldn't pass it up that is by far the cheapest I have seen it for. I haven't looked often but every time I did I never saw it cheaper than $350. I know the vive and cv1 are better, but for an initial pc VR experience the dk2 will work just fine. But if I find the graphics look like a playstation 1 then I will be selling it as fast as I bought it.
