Upgrading to 144hz. Will I notice a difference in rfactor 2 ?

I am considering upgrading my monitor and video card to run 144hz. I really can't tell how serious a video card I need, because I can't tell where rFactor falls in the spectrum of hard core video games. Nobody references rF2 when quoting how many fps they get in those forums.

    So,

    1) Will I notice a difference going from an Dell ultra sharp and a Radeon HD 7800 series card ?

    2) If I want to move up to a 144hz screen, what level of graphics cars would be needed ?

On a single monitor at 1080p, running the highest settings you'd probably need a 780-equivalent (and higher) or Titan.

Does rF2 run better with an nVidea or Radeon based card ?

I changed from a 60 to 144 hz monitor and from a HD 5070 to AMD r280 3gb and it changed my game. If l drive my bro in laws 760 and 60 hz now l get a dizzy sort of feeling from what seems like stutters but isn't. Its hard to explain but very evident.. Mine hardly ever goes below 80 fps.with max to high settings except reflections on low.. You certainly won't regret it and my card isn't high end compared to what's available.

144hz monitor doesn't mean you have to have 144 fps locked. I run my screens at 144hz but 120 fps capped.
The difference between 60 fps and 120 fps is quite visible when you are not used to it. Everything seems more fluid, with life like movement. Don't know how to explain it.

I would recommend at least a used GTX 780 or new 970/980. My GTX 780 drives three screens at 100+ fps in multiview although not with full settings.

    i have a gtx 1070 and an asus PG248Q with 144hz.
in my opinion its a real big difference, the game movement is way smoother. i also use gsync which make the game feel even better

With some number crunching having the screen refresh more than twice as fast the two different images provided by a 50hz & 144hz there can be as much as 2 meters in difference where you will see the car visually placed on the track. Nth degree of information but for the best driving results being able to brake 2m further into corners or see the apex 2m earlier will definitely make a difference.

Just remember guys if any upgrades to a higher frequency remember to use a Display Port 1.2 for memory and not HDMI as its locked in at 60Hz.......... Dont quote me but just what I was told........And if anyone could verify this it would be great...

yes you must use a display port 1.2, hdmi is locked at 60hz in newest standart i think. both have the same picture quality and modern gpu have more display port slots (my gtx 1070 has 3 displayports und just 1 hdmi) so i would use a display port ;)

DVI (Dual Link) is good in 1080p too.

Dual DVI is fine to run 144Hz, no need for displayport etc. if it isn't possible. I use 144Hz @ DSR x2.25(2880x1620).

I used it like that on a GTX 970 and it was fine with a few settings on medium or some unnecessary ones on off, although where I race the tracks/cars tend to be well optimised, which also plays a big part. But I won't go any lower than 970.

As a side note: if you want to use AMD, you get VSR(their equivalent of Nvidia's DSR), but you can't use 144Hz if you use higher VSR settings, or even 120Hz - at 2880x1620 I was only able to go up to 100Hz.

It's very much a driver limitation, not a hardware one, and one I've written a very passionate reply about here: https://community.amd.com/thread/193863. But I doubt they really give a crap. And then they wonder why Nvidia have a majority market share.

That is accurate. Either displayport or dvi-d. Hdmi is limited to 60 Hz.

Would be interesting to have a source for this statement, i guess HDMI 2.0 is limited to 120Hz (UHD).

144hz to 60hz is like living in another world! You 'll be faster, more constantly and it feels way better.
50FPS at 144hz is still better than 50FPS at 60hz. Its a game changer.

In 60 hz you have a frame at best each 16,66ms
At 144hz you have a frame at best each 6,94ms
that means you can react 9,72ms earlier on anything what might happen (bump, oversteer, etc.).

Exactly that. Also, with 120/144Hz unsynced, tearing will be greatly reduced (down to almost non existant), compared to 60Hz unsynced. Even typical desktop work is smoother.

Considering that human reaction time is around 200 ms, that 9,72 ms is very marginal improvement (I have seen people drive with TVs that have 100 ms input lag, and then it starts to matter truly). I'd be almost sure you'll see no practical difference in lap time, especially with rF2 that delivers a large part of it's bump/oversteer feel from FFB and FFB thread is decoupled from graphics thread. I've also noticed no lap time benefit from running FPS 60 locked vs 120 locked.
