There you go! Someone like Reiza or so could propably do this....

I dont think that would happen, as modders are smart and social enough to not do this! Just look at all the free mods (I dont have to list all the games where free mods are available!)
Charging is possible nowadays anyway! (look at URD)
And a simple five-star-ranking-system will avoid that anyways. A little bit more openmind please!

Even Reiza could not supply tracks at less than $1 each, let alone laser scanned tracks. I think the proposed price for non-laser scanned DLC tracks is around $5.

I'd like a lot more information than that. Who runs the shop? The flightsim company or some other group of people? How do they verify that items offered for sale are put into the shop by the legit creator of the item? How is this verification done? How do I get my mod out from the store if someone else puts it there? Is it checked in any way that the actual sales reported by the site are true? So they don't claim they sold 5 of my mods but in reality they sold 500?

What about the money that was made using stolen goods? What kind of requirements are there for the mods? Are the mods checked so they work and how well they are tested? Can I simply make a cube and put it there for sale for 5€ and add a disclaimer that realistic physics will be added at later date? How does the shop manage the obvious copyright issues when there are real branded cars and tracks in the shop? Maybe cessna or boeing doesn't really care about their names being used to sell simulator software but I'm sure the car manufacturers and race series do care a bit too much.

What stores are you speaking of? Like can we get some examples?

I don't get the discussion about the paid DLC mods or content. (could easily be my language) Lets see if i get it right:
Studio 397 has to make money right? So they need to thinker off a earn model otherwise their business has no meaning at all. If i recall Marcel has stated that somewhere. Sure we all know he's a passionate simracer himself but he also has to care for his business.

So a business case would/could be payware DLC offered in steam, if studio 397 make the content themselves or they hire a company or modding group to make the content is up to them. They will take care off quality and be sure it's not ripped content.
Modding groups who would like to offer their mod and along the way would like to see/earn some money could offer their mod to studio 397 and take it for granted that s397 takes a little profit for that themselves. Our they could choose to go the URD route and open up their own webshop for their mods, i think Aless and his team do a great job (don't wanna talk about what you think off the URD mods that is an other discussion).

So selection of payware mods is done before they even reach Steam and in the hands of s397 so no moderation needed in the Steam DLC payware shop.

Is it more difficult than that?

Setup an account at the digitalcombatsimulator.com website. DCS uses a free basic install with one map and two planes. You download it from their site. It includes fully operational multiplayer and single player missions. Each additional plane you purchase at their site. Each additional scenery - which is like 1 or 2 locations, is bought at the DCS site.

The problem with modded content is that 99% of that is unlicensed. In the sim racing business today all companies build licensed content. rF1 got away with producing tracks like "Brianza", but today it's not the way to go when making official content. Hence I'm pretty sure that selling modded content as DLC in Steam is not gonna happen. Even if they found away around it, they couldn't use real car names or cockpits.

DCS stuff is top top notch as is Iracings , both require payment for their mods

I don't see a problem with 397 charging for mods providing they are top notch quality

There will be plenty of 3rd party mods free of charge for rf2 , perhaps a few will be top quality too

    So there is choice

Iracing doesn't have any mods. Unless you count those spotter packs.

@Eddy - you're borderline not talking about mods at that point. If the dev are vetting the content it's more like independent contractors.

@guod - that's exactly what I don't want. Microtrasaction and iracing style pay model. I'm here because it was a once and done payment. If we were all okay with the iracing payment model why are we playing rf2 ? Iracing has laser scanned tracks that everyone has to have.

I understand everyone wants new shinny content but let's be cautious about how we get it. I'm all for expansion pack style DLC where you get a whole series + tracks.

Also DLC is a very broad term. Let's not forget that.

Who proposed this price ? This is exactly what I don't want to happen.

Laser scanning + track license cost + development, that together means a track can't be sold covering all costs for much lower than $5. AMS Brit pack DLC sells for $20 and it has 3 small tracks and only a handful of cars. We have to remember that the current rF2 content was financed partly with the multiplayer fees. Tim obtained "cheap" licenses and tracks were not laser scanned, although track surveys were done. All the European tracks are very expensive to even license.

If we are being generous about the price per track the cost of the content I want is rivaling iracing. Why would isi and company wish to want to go anywhere near that ? Take one of the +s of rf2 and turn it into a loss due to others having laser scanned tracks.

I'll assume the reason ISI can't work out some cheaper deal for the data iracing or AMS or other companies that have got from laser scanned is legal ? The work for scanning is already done.

[OT] I read somewhere about mesh based car damage or something, what is this and can I turn it on ?

Yep, the license rights belong to the track owners. The laser-scanned data for many tracks already exists in the cloud, but you can't buy it from other sim companies. Tim Wheatley wrote following comment regarding Nords/Spa costs:

With all of this DLC talk. Before thinking of milking people who already bought the sim, wouldn't it be an idea to finish the sim first to sell it to new people ?
I hope it's the route studio 397 will be following, because I'm not considering buying any DLC for the current rF2.

But when is the sim "finished"? It was under ISI and will continue to be under Studio397 a Constantly Evolving Platform, no point waiting until the end to sell to new racers as that's years away. Best to sell on the way when new and improved features are added, alongside content.

What ever the way forward is I guess everyone has to a accept & respect it

If there's no lasered tracks then I'm more than happy to mainly stick to the excellent historic content

If 397-rf2 was in instead rfactor3 then we'd all be having to purchase again full price,
Remember also that 397 should rightly be receiving revenue from this one way or another

anyone that does not want to part with a penny doesn't have too as multipul dx9 versions of rf2 are available/usable

While I disagree with the "milking people" part I agree that it needs development first before start selling DLC. Especially the performance part. It's going to be a suicide to start selling DLC if the game "looks" and performs like crap.

Inb4 physics is the main point bla bla bla bla, we all know that, it's not the point of my comment.

I don't understand the problem with the prospect of buying DLC. If it happens, it wouldn't be expensive and would ensure new content would keep coming. I'm paying a small fortune a month for just electric and gas, let alone all the other bills, my T300 wheel and Fanatec pedals came to over £500. In the scheme of things I'd happily pay £15 for an official Nordschleife! And I've bought rF2 twice, two annual subscriptions and a lifetime subscription. And I'm very far from well off at the moment! DLC has done AC no harm - in fact it's done it a lot of good.

That said, it's pointless getting passionate over the subject at the moment since no one knows what will happen yet.
