I thought NetKar "walk around mode" was a big innovation even in it's basic form.
I remember when people asked if they would be able to injure people standing on the track. lol

Remember Race Driver ( I think it was ) with the drivers room ?

So in future sim develop VR ground up with working driver models and guests that can do basic shooter stuff like walk, run, jump, crouch.

Have the drivers room with teamspeak, like some of these VR games have a general room to meet, etc.

Jump up onto a Belgium haybale it would rock back n forth. lol
Walk / Run up into the hills as naturally as a VR shooter

edit: .....You could stage a fashion parade of the latest in Driver wear . lol

    Many possibility outside the cockpit.

good idea to make a poll. more than i thought already preordered and interesting: only 1 out of 100 selected "I've tried VR and it is not for me " (and this one tried a flawed non native VR implementation). would be interesting how much more order when rifts go out and/or you are able to try VR at your local store.

Bear in mind 98 voters (at the moment) isn't huge, and is probably biased in favour of VR overall (I simply ignored the thread for a couple of days, then when I finally looked and saw the poll thought it would be only fair to vote). But it's hard to get a representative sample with these things.

yes i know 100 votes isn't much and you have to consider too that ppl discussing on the forum (maybe are the more engaged rf2 simracers) don't have to represent the rf2 userbase.

Also factor (pun intended!) in those that voted for Pre Order when they actually haven't, purely in the hope it would sway the outcome!
Whilst polls are nice you have to accept all possible scenarios and eventualities, not everything is always black & white.

I think the reasoning could be to try out both, stick with the superior one and sell off the other (at least that was one guy explained was his intention).

And then there is always the possibility that VR will go the same route as 3D movies. A nice technology but not picked up by the masses so not viable for companies to keep pursuing. (or the other way around if you will)

I have tested the 2nd Oculus dev version in iRacing and was completely blown away. Me want that...
So eventhough Im in the process of buying rF2 at the moment I will lay rF2 dead when I get the Oculus CV and get back to iRacing.
But only because it sounds like the rF2 developers dont know their proper priorities
Because eventhough I allready like the rF2 tiremodel better than iRacings I dont want to use a 2D sim when a 3D sim stands ready on the grid:p

Note: And eventhough Im pretty layed back of what happens with rF2 then I think its a pity this good sim will become even more a niche product. hehe rF2 the Secret Sim.

Catering to a tiny minority of VR owners, and abandoning work on stuff that actually benefits all of rF2's users would be proper priorities?
Right. I must have misread the chapter on good business practices.

People still believe VR will flop? VR is already a thing weather you want to admit it or not. Every big tech company is involved and working in one way are another on VR/AR. I understand that not everyone is optimistic about adopting new tech but comparing VR to 3d movies is just a naive thing to do. The applications of VR are far beyond just one media or form of entertainment and expand to science, entertainment, medical etc etc.
In today's dynamic tech world, if you don't move forward, you are basically left behind...

Right, but VR tech is not new, it's been around since the '80s, and it's only now making it to mainstream. Remember the movie Lawnmower Man (1992)? The commercial inclusion also has the same problem as 3D TV: differing & competing proprietary standards. We're still a few years from seeing who the winners & losers will be. Another barrier to widespread adoption, as opposed to niche uses, is whether average consumers will add a device costing more than their console... let's face it, the console consumer already has troubles buying a wheel/pedals for racing games.

Calling me naïve and refusing to even see the 'possibility' of this thing not being successful.....well,its nice to see so much enthusiasm for a subject, good for you man. I hope it works out well.

Not sure how old you are but this is the 4th or 5th VR wave we have seen coming to the surface in the last 2 or 3 decades and it always has been a hype, in the news, next big thing, companies diving into it. gamers going wild, etc.
And of course we are seeing much more turmoil around it today because tech is so much more advanced then in the times Nintendo started with VR so allot more companies and platforms can adopt to it more easily. which strengthens the hype.
But also means a bit less then it would have meant back in the days.

But it still needs allot more then what we have now. otherwise it will remain a niche thing for niche gamers, real estate agents, amusement parks, military, pilots and architects.

Tell me how the applications far beyond just one media are working out for the mainstream masses please. because that is where the success will mostly depend on.
Oh and I'm not trying to talk it down, I was merely opting a possibility. I apologise for that.

The less dramatic occurrence will be new purchases for different titles due to the experience, and possibly fun factor - regardless of level of fidelity. I had a few acquaintances buy Life for Speed because they wanted to experience the tech in that environment of gaming, and read about more users buying it just to try (and often blog about).

The wheel and pedals have nothing to do with my statement really and I wasn't talking about VR in gaming/simracing as per say. I was talking about the tech which has greater reach than purely gaming. Yes, it's currently focused towards gaming because gamers are the ones who would have powerful enough PCs to run the HMDs but my point is that it reaches far beyond in terms of capabilities than 3d movies.

OK I didn't mean to offend you nor call you naive. I was talking in general as this is not the first time I see such comment and the thing is I've seen these comments on forums of games where the Devs have no immediate plans to support the tech as if the fans are trying to convince themselves it's for the better and that the tech will not succeed. Don't take it personal :)

My point was that comparing it to 3D movies is not accurate and really unfair towards VR as movies stand on their own and as you listed even yourself, VR reaches beyond. On top of the things you listed, I'd say also applictions for business (thing video conferencesas as one example, remote work/management etc); medical (for training); design (for example clothing, interior etc); virtual tourism entertainment (for example Alton Towers in UK - http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-35290384); advertising, sales etc. I also don't think we should be comparing the current state of VR with the past iterations because not only technology has advanced but also the consumers are different.

Again, sorry if you took my comment as offensive

And my point is the basic tech hasn't changed since the late '80s. Wearable devices that allow you to interact with a digital world. The helmets they wore in Lawnmower Man are no different than the current crop of devices, so how is VR tech different this time?

The applications for VR have not suddenly changed from the late '80s, either. You're not going to convince a business leader to don a dorky helmet for a video conference. Consumers are not going to buy devices just to receive advertising unless they feel there's more to the purchase. Medicine has been able to buy whatever strikes their fancy, so why aren't they already using the VR tech that's been available for 25 years?

And a couple of handy links for those who wish to revisit where VR has already been:

So basically what you are saying is the what we have today is all we will ever need so why bother evolve and move forward? Yes many things are done without VR but this is like saying why do we need smart phones, GSM was perfectly fine to make phone calls. Also you cannot be serious the tech has not changed for the past 25 years.
Anyway, discussing new tech on a gaming forum...now that's my time well wasted with really 0 things to be accomplished.
