I have 32gb so I can test for ya's. Any specific tests? Or just run rF2 normally, check ram usage then ramp up the ai and check again. On it................ Obviously the more stuff you have installed the more ram your going to eat!
Thanks. Don't think he gave any more details other than 28-32 AI cars, so not sure what other parameters (if any) might affect the results too. Does it? So long as the installed software is not running, then it shouldn't do, right?
i got 12gb of ram and I can run rf2 with 40 Stock cars. Also 7.5gb of ram just running windows 7? something wrong with his comp. I got 99 process running and its only using 2.95/3gb of RAM Dont waste your money on 32gb. 8gb should be fine.
depends a lot on how you set up the software and how much you have installed. They nearly always want to check up for new versions etc so have a process running all the time. It's done like this to save the 'user' time and effort and to make sure your always running the latest, hotfix's etc etc phone software 'waiting' for you to connect your phone, satnav, camera etc etc of course if your a relatively knowledgeable user you turn all this crap off. start, run, msconfig and check the startup tab. this will tell you how many progs run when you turn on your pc. anyway to business.... initial start up of rF2 used 2.7gb,9 AI and me. increased AI to 29 ram increased to 3gb AI to 49 increased ram to 5gb tried a different mod and track but just the same. when I swapped mod ram stayed at 3gb,increased to 5gb once I had 49 AI in. changed track, ram dropped back to 2.7gb,increased to 5gb once had 49 AI in.
Ok, thanks mysta. Looks like something is certainly screwy with his pc then. Did you mean 5.4gb? Amount of ram usage is proportional to the number of processes running in windows?
Yes,not quite proportional but related as each process uses a different amount of ram. making sure to tick the box 'show processes from all users'
104 Cars (Apex and URD) at Nordschleife, max settings = 10.2 GB for the rF2 process. It runs quite good until you look (and move) in the direction of the pits/garages and the gfx engine starts to switch between the closest visible cars. At that point the frametimes go crazy and I notice a lot of stuttering. With TV cams I see single digit fps, because they render all cars (and the LOD's are broken, hint hint ). I wonder if a faster PCIe-bus (my old Sandy has only 2.0x16) or faster RAM would help in that situation. Atm 16GB RAM is enough (8GB is not), but who knows what the future brings. I think it's time for dx11 or 12.
With the Apex alone it's 9.7GB for me, but you can do the ultimate test and select all mods as opponents.
Those values in this test are virtual memory! It has nothing to do with how much physical memory the process needs. You could easily reserve terabytes of virtual address space but only using some kilobytes of physical memory. If rFactor would really need 14gig it wouldn't run on 8gig systems...
I tested last night with 45 AI URD Darsche cars and me at Nurburgring 24h (so this is "both" tracks loaded) and I barely passed 4 GB used by rF2 (total memory usage - real plus virtual).
According to my logging software I've never used more than 9.2GB of RAM (16GB system) with rF2, and I've tested 100 cars (C6Rs of that time), this was shortly before the 64bit release. For most usage, other that crazy tests, I can't imagine an average person needing more than 8GB max if they have visible cars set properly and virtual memory set. That reminds me, I haven't set my virtual memory to 20000 min 20000 max like I normally do after I format. Will do that now.
Oh and prior to loading games I'm using less than 3GB, sometimes less than 2GB right after startup. But I ordinarily run video capture, track ir, etc with games.
I know 100 cars is a bit unrealistic, but in my opinion it's a good test for the supreme discipline of any sim. Endurance racing with many different cars and classes. A large field of vehicles (LeMans 2015 had 60 starters), all different models and skins, needs more memory than the typical single car cup racing series and not all cars are as good optimized as the ISI cars. One major disadvantage for all modding teams is that they can't have ,as far as I know, something like a commonmaps.mas-file to save some space for common used textures. I know the Apex modding team tried to implement that but it didn't work. Every car has to load it's own set of the same textures. In that regard some extra memory is always welcome.
Well I'm now at 32GB and I notice zero difference, but then I didn't expect to But at least now I'm satisfied that I'll never come close running out of RAM. Another 16GB was only $59 USD at Newegg, so why not?
Nordschleife2 2.01 50 cars Nissan GT1 I use 12 cars visible and tested with 20 cars visible and no difference ,only my fps down a bit. all at max only shadows at High 76% of my 8gb around 2 min to load the track if I could now put 16gb. View attachment 19136 View attachment 19137
The best thing for me about having 16GB RAM is that I can use some programs that DO use a chunk of RAM at the same time as each other - none of those are gaming apps.
