Perhaps it would be more useful to compare rF2 FPS increase against some other DX9 titles or other racing sims. For sure comparing gains against some synthetic benchmarks (3D Mark) is not much useful as they stress the GPU in very different way.

The above could be a very good point, DirectX11 optimization vs DirectX9.

Please don't mistake my testing with predominantly 3D mark as a sign of the only testing that shows these 30+% increases in performance. You look anywhere else using games for benchmarks and the same is true. In fact my 3D mark gpu scores correlate perfectly with their 3d mark gpu scores and so i should be safe to assume my card (also MSI GTX 970) will match their in-game performance too.

The latest 3d mark (2014?) gpu scores were 35-47% higher than a gtx 770. The in-game scores were around 27-36%. Naturally lower than 3d mark improvements would otherwise say. When you then couple in the overclock, 3d marks becomes around 50-62% higher than gtx 770 and 41-51% higher in-game.

Lime Rock and a car with highly reflective bodywork like the Clio or Camaro (although in a race with AI, that comes into play more than running solo laps).

I'm not really sure what to make of this. Something is really wrong with your scores, since you should be seeing a 50-70% increase from a GTX 580 to a GTX 770. Perhaps you can try the replay benchmark test.

The reason i do compare them is because my GTX 770 scored correctly relative to the other card scores in that benchmarking thread (which uses a replay: http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/19682-NEW-Benchmark-comparison-between-AMD-Nvidia). It's only the GTX 970 that massively underperformed.

    Have a look at this:

    http://www.maximumpc.com/nvidia_geforce_gtx_980_review2014?page=0,3

It looks like the 780/780ti beats the 980 because of memory bandwidth when running at resolutions above 2560x1440. Triple 1080p screens are in between 4k and 2560x1440. Waiting to see some reviews with triple monitors.

Also, most of the 980 cards I have seen I had a single DVI-D connection and 2 Displayport connections, so 3D vision surround might be tricky. Three DVI-I monitors will need a couple of adapter cables.

does anyone know how much faster the GTX 980 will run rfactor2 than a GTX 680? Is it a substantial amount? Other benchmarks suggest the card is about twice as fast as a GTX 680 ... but does that translate to rFactor2 with triples?

This will be useful for triple screen owners, however, I still only use a single 1080 monitor.

    edit:

I find that link you provided in conflict with this one however: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-review

    980 beats 780Ti in 2k and 4k.

If my results are correct, then not likely. But i'm finding it hard to believe the improvements are this small whereas everywhere else it's massive.

I run two 680 FTW 4GB in SLI. With the recent driver update, performance in rF2 has improved substantially. Going from a single 680 to SLI did not double performance, and with rF2, until this latest driver update, it was a detriment. My guess is that a GTX 980 will run 30% faster than TWO 680s in SLI and produce less heat while using less power. Whether that's faster than a cheaper GTX 780ti has yet to be seen.

You have a 970, no? It has 25% less cores and less clock speed than the 980. I think the software (rF2) has a lot to do with whether the power of the new cards is utilized...as it does with SLI performance.

On newegg.com the 780ti is still ~$700 while the gtx 980 is ~$550.

I also have a single gtx 770 connected to a 1080p TV, and it runs rF2 noticeably smoother/better than a single gtx 680 on a single screen (graphics maxed). I couldn't tell you the frame rate difference off the top of my head, but it is smooth, whereas the 680 needed a tiny bit of tweaking to be just as smooth (lower shadows or less AA).

A gtx770 is a decent card so 15% on first drivers isn't at all bad

Expect a further boost on the next couple of driver releases

About 7 years ago, my flat mate had a Sony 1080p TV and noticed a huge performance gain when using the TV vs the monitor. We checked and tested dozens of times that all settings were indeed indentical for both tests and for some still unknown reason, the fps performance when using the Sony 1080p TV was around 40% higher, which also translated into silky smooth performance in comparison. Graphically, they looked identical and when we had both monitors plugged in and duplicated the images, performance would defer to the monitor performance (40% less). Even took photos of the screen in the same location on the Sony TV with and without the monitor duplicated and graphically they are identical. It was the weirdest thing. Same result in any game we test.

I'm really not convinced this is a driver issue. Performance is over 30% at stock clocks in everything else. I really think there's something wrong from my end causing this.

Doubt your i5 is causing a bottleneck there should be a decent amount of headroom there

-my titan was below my expected performance until the 2nd release of drivers
(after the 1st that stated titan compatibility etc in the notes) so only mentioned this due to my own experience

+15% is still pretty good though -remember your 770 is still a fairly current card
There's other advantages (apparently ) with the 9series other than fps

Get a decent sale on your 770 & it'll be a decent move still
