That Atari Sprint is the oldest video game I can remember. Once I learned the trick (let the wheel spin freely with a flick and the car drifted perfectly) it was fun,

First PC sim was TOCA: Touring Car Championship.

My first race game of any type was this:

Network Q Rally Championship was the one I started my career with. I actually did complete (and win) the championship (the actual RAC rally) mode about two years ago when I played the game via DosBox. It's crazy because the stages are as long as the real ones and the longest took me over 40 minutes of driving with keyboard until I finished the stage. Talk about realism! :D

My first racing game was Auto Racing.

On the Intellivision in 1979. Awesome gaming platform.

Indi 500 and Test Drive 2. A bit later Grand Prix 2, then Viper Racing and SCGT... those were the days where the driving with keyboard was fun. XD

My first PC racing games were NASCAR Racing and IndyCar Racing II from Papyrus. They not only piqued my interest in simracing, but rekindled my interest in real life racing. I had been a racing fan as a kid, but had lost interest as I got older.

I am now hopelessly addicted to simracing. :D

I remember something very similar, if not this, as well. I forgot all about that. Wow, memory lane here!

I posted a outline of my car game history in the "why do you play rf2" thread. Now I'm gonna do it here too :)
    View attachment 5849
The major mention there is GP2 with GP2 Edit and Paul Hoad's Track Editor. I was doing that stuff for years! Then by default I fell on the Crammond side when it came time for F1C, so no ISI for me 'til rF. Not much GPL either (too hard for me as a kid with a keyboard :( )

A few that didn't make my picture but i did play a little were...

Ivan Stewart's Super Off Road, on PC

Lotus III: The Ultimate Challenge (with turbo track and THE soundtrack!)

Super Monaco GP, on Sega Master System II
    Pole Position, on BBC Micro
    Grand Prix Circuit, on PC
    Grand Prix Manager, on PC
Colin McRae Rally 2, on PC

edit: I'll include Ferrari Virtual Academy too, despite it not being old. But I did hotlap Nurburgring in the F1 for a few days [off the record, the F1 felt a lot more planted in FVA than the rF1 F1 mods...] :)

Sports Car GT is probably the oldest Sim I have played but really got my start with (PC) NT 2003, NT 2004. So basicly I got my start with ISI titles and it continued from there with SimBin titles and rFactor. IMO ISI's game engine is still the best even though I think ISI hasn't always made the best use of it. I think rF2 is a fine title but am worried the mod management may end up getting messy.
If I were to rate game engines it might go like this ISI motor, Papy Racing, Kunos tech, LFS engine, Codemasters, Madness, Lizard.

That's a good one. I couldn't remember the name of this one. The long ass stages were awesome. I don't understand how back then we had such realistic rally track, but in DIRT games, the track is couple minutes long at best?

I'm incredibly biased towards GP4, for me still the greatest. 10 years old this year.

GPL and GP4 have to be the 2 standouts.

What else has got better with age ?

Indycar Racing & Network Q Rally Championship were my first racing games (unless you count Outrun on Atari ST, lol).
Played 'em to death. Countless races at Michigan in ICR. Actually broke a joystick playing Network Q Rally! :p
