That's a common train of thought, and often correct. However, Newey still designs by hand.

Devil's advocate, Newey's example doesnt say much.
As Newey is same generation as mine, we all had great problems as designers, to cope with CAD drawing.

This problem is more frequent for people who were freelance (not employees).
All my University collegues, with bussiness of their own, didnt ever made the transition from pencil to CAD.
I was lucky (?) at my 40's, to turn into CAD, as I was offered a place in a company, that couldnt spare me a CAD assistant, so I had to learn for myself if I wanted the job.

The turning from pencil to CAD was simply a nightmare, I felt like I was scubadiving and asked to draw at the same time.
It took me two years of everyday practicing on job to get really productive and I can really sympathise for those that couldnt.
Throwing away a skill (hand drawing) that took 25 years (in my case) to imperfect, is not something all people can endure, even if CAD is a million times more productive than hand drawing.

I bet mr Newey has a team of CAD designers translating his drawings in CAD form, as its the only way to work, after all, he can afford to (not learn CAD).

(btw, drawing with CAD and drawing freehand at a stylist/designer level, is pretty much the same thing, only at CAD, its easier.
With all that said, I believe the overwhelming majority of car designers nowdays, simply do not design, they just manipulate aerodynamic data, applied on predrawn stylistic trends)

Yep, I think you're right about everything you said. But the modern cars are still quite ugly, even though he 'pencilled' the RB. :)

Ultimately, though, we ARE talking about 'tools'. It's really no different than discussing the beauty of a hand plane vs. a power circular saw. So, I think calling anything 'ugly' by no means takes away from the "value" (if we can even assign one) of that thing. :)

EDIT Lancia Stratos by Marcello Gandini of Bertone house at the time (Gandini is a legend by his own, Lamborghini Miura etc)

Yeah, it's a gorgeous car, and quite historic when you think about it. The 881 was no slouch, either. Almost any photo from 1988 you have two McLaren then two of the 881s! :)

Capelli should have won the French GP in 1990 but for a gearbox issue IIRC. Other than that and sporadic low points finishes, the car was a bit of a lemon but definitely one of the better looking cars of the time (I personally liked the anhedral-winged Tyrrell 019).

As Tim said, March had a stellar 1988 and even lead at Suzuka. And it has to be remembered they were running the normally aspirated Judd V8 outperforming a lot of the clearly superior turbo runners.

Nothing like having exposed cooling lines right on the top of the car where they can scald you if they rupture in an accident :)

That and a roll bar that looks about as strong as a metal coat hanger.

    @ 1959nikos

    Thank you.
Although it is regrettable that updating has stopped recently, it waits expecting.
