Please, if you want to convince ISI, say something more than only a ridiculous +1. A rF2 dedicated server running under Linux machines will be the best solution for the Online communities. A Linux server monthly rent is cheap, and you can host a Web site, a Forum, Mail, PHP...etc etc etc, and all the needed to manage a Online Racing Community with his Championships. Only the rF or rF2 dedicated server under Linux is missed. 8(
A more practical solution would be testing under Wine. It's not as elegant as a native server with a nice command line interface but it's easy to setup a VNC head on your Linux server and run Wine under it.
I was really hoping rFactor2 would support Linux Dedicated Servers but it looks like I have to pass :/ We have some drivers ready who want to drive and it looks like it will end like in rF1. We wanted to use a dedi server for known reasons like better perfomance and lag. Two of us are having powerful root server which could handle it but both are running Linux and I don't know anybody who uses a Windows server, especially for gaming. On our server for example, we are running 6+ game server of 6 different games right now at the same time which all support Linux + some websites. We stopped playing rFactor 1 because we couldn't use a dedicated server and it looks like nobody of us will make the same mistake again by buying rF2. It's quite sad to see a community driven racing game with focus on multiplayer doesn't support linux, which may be not a gaming OS but definately the best game-hosting OS. I don't want to blackmail ISI with not buying the game or something like that, I'm just hopeful that ISI will release Linux dedi server software until release so me and my friends can enjoy this game. And I think there are many more out there who would love to see linux support.
no it wouldn't. there are many features that are possible and only few of them are in rF2. why should it be impossible?
Safety(Salute) What brings Linux with regard to Windows? As for myself I have a PC which makes waiter(server) of game(set, play) for r*Factor 1 and 2 20 on 1 and 15 on the other one more Web site ( 5 ) No concerns(marigolds). Then if Linux is OK ca will change what?
@Luky: Add a little bit English grammar to these English words pls and let us know what you point is?
Sorry translation Google is bad grrr What does a Linux vs. Windows? A personal PC windows website, rFactor2 Dedicated, and other forums. 2 ditto Linux PC staff. Rent, rates do change much.
Yeah I'm with you guys. I had Linux running on an old Dell and it was snappy as all get out. Had to reinstall Windows XP just for rFactor 2 server and the same hardware is now DOG slow. The server is running but barely. NEED Linux server NOW! If they did Solaris I'd REALLY be over cloud nine but Linux would be good enough. I have some server hardware (Sun Enterprise 2) that is begging to be used.
Hello isi, you've told us that with every suggestion you would either make it yourself or make sure the community can do it. Have you decided about the linux dedicated server yet?
I'd love to see a native Linux dedicated server for rf2. It would mean I could get rid of the VMWare Windows XP install for hosting races from my Linux server. So +1 from me.
