Is the use of real names on servers mandatory? I would much prefer usng the user's nickname. Many leagues use nicknames and I dont see a problem with allowing that bit of anonymity. This is not iRacing wonderland. On top of that we would have to re-learn all those boring real names of our racing friends. Other than that, a top-notch sim experience, congratualtions for the beta launch!
I think it should be an OPTION. Not EVERYONE wants to see "NOOB!!11!!RACER enters server" I think it's much nicer to have "Bob Smith enters server" This should be a checkbox on the server somewhere.... it shouldn't be enforced one or the other, should be optional for the host/client.
I would guess that it hasn't been implemented yet. I looked in the player.plr file and both names are listed in there, you real name and your player nick that you entered when you registered. I can't imagine that there would be a player nick in the plr that you won't be able to use.
It isn't implemented yet, but we may allow hosts to setup servers for your known name (not necessarily your real one) so that you can't logout, change, login, etc.

I will not use rf2 online until it stops showing my real name I'm close to hitting the refund button over this issue. I only race on my own server.
I would never have guessed that this would be such an issue! I only ever race with my real name, I've got nothing to hide. Having said that, it is a perfectly good thing to include as an option in the game. Like most things, why force people down one path when you can give them options? Gives you a better shot at pleasing more people. Good to see they are planning on adding, or maybe just activating, the option. Jason
I only race with my nickname, because driving like i do and showing your real name is an invite to stalking and violence. Besides, my name is not as cool as my nickname .
In the free world you should have the right to choose....I only give my name to friends. I have nothing to hide from....I too like my race name and have used it since 2004. It's part of being a full member in GrimRacing...but we don't dictate that you must use a nickname or real name it's up to you. I even give false names to coppers (just kidding)
it's not a matter of hiding anything. there's no reason to be broadcasting your real name, most likely though a firewall exception
I think our intention is to force you to use the same name, not your real one. You could just not race online 'til we implement something, or just race with friends. Or you could use the methods described to change your name, but be aware that later on this may cause issues if different from your nickname I'm told.
Thanks Tim... One of our members has posted a way of changing the name and it works. Make a back up of the original file first. First Name = Grim Last Name = Dad
why do you want to hide behind a nickname online anyways. What is so dangerous about telling someone your real name?
Just make sure to make a mental note that you did that. When/if we change our system it may break it. Infact each time you update rF2 you might want to restore it back to how it should be, update, then edit again. Just trying to keep you compatible.
Due to my job it is preferred that my real name is not used so I would like to see this changed in the future. Thanks for the work-arounds posted
