Mitt, Zeos, for the sake of the board, please take this discussion into PMs or it's going to bring everyone into it and ruin a perfectly sensible thread. Neither of you is going to convince the other one. This is an old argument that has such diametrically opposed views that it's like two brick walls talking.

An update carried out through steam would come directly from ISI so regardless of the way the update is installed it shouldn't affect mods at all. Not to mention the infrequency of updates to a game like rfactor. If there are 4 updates a year I would be shocked.

As specified on the OTHER licenses thread (the one with the poll) I too am for a steam release. I have shown how a publisher can unhinge almost all reliability from the steam program/network itself. ArmA2 is purchasable through steam, downloaded and kept up to date. However if you navigate to the folder where arma2 is located you can run the game without even starting steam. I have even proved you could move the entire arma2 folder out to a different hard drive or partition and it will still function even with multiple copies existing on a single system with different mods installed on each. The same could be true for rFactor2 if ISI wish it to be.

I bought the game the same month it came using Trymedia. I have never had any problems with it these last 6(!) years, and I've been buying and upgrading my computer without problems and changing to different versions of Windows without a flaw, all I had to do was to save a certain email with my code that I sent to Gjon( I think it was him =)) and I got new licences!

I would hate it if they decided to use Steam I've had nothing but trouble with it, sure as I read in this thread not everybody has the same bad luck I have! But I feel they should retain Trymedia(or similar) method of buying, and of course to be able to buy a hard-copy! I dont wanna install a third-party program that uses my connection all the time just so I can play my favourite game!

And arma 2 was available several ways including hard copy. ISI can prepare rF2 the exact same way.

I'd prefer hard copy over steam anyday.

me too! but the best way to fight piracy would be steam but that would exclude many people.

This topic is Moot. The Q&A has already answered and they are using a content distribution system of their own.

I think steam is great. I use it myself.

However, I would avoid using it at all costs as a developer if I had a choice... lol Go figure. :)

Wicked how that works right? lol. I love Steam as a user but I could imagine the pain as a developer.

Not sure I understand, not being a developer. What exactly is the issue?

I would imagine Steam being a fantastic opportunity, even for a specialist game like rFactor.

Anyway, I realise there is a proprietary distribution system in the works, I'd just like to plead that it is nothing like TryMedia though. I have a real hatred for limited activations, especially as it is a serious chore to get new activations out of them. It's a unnecessary and inelegant solution to a problem that is still a problem. rFactor is very easy to pirate/share with 100% usability, a simple key check would be better.
