Started with just the notion of a remesh then...... Mr djvicious kindly pointed out that the RF1 version was long??? 1km too long! So I may as well make both versions since it is virtually a scratch build apart from some objects.
Blessing your heart rather, for shifting the work in the correct direction. You informed me at just the correct time. I would have wasted many hours. I will put an honorary plaque on the new overpass devoted to you. As a fellow Canadian you know Toronto and Vancouver are special!
I'll be looking for that plaque! Toronto is such a wonderful place. The Indy calendar just wasn't the same without it. There has always been an empty void since the loss of Vancouver too. Edmonton wasn't a bad circuit, in fact I like airport circuits, but the city just didn't work very hard in promoting the event. I went in 2010 when I was visiting my sister and I was shocked by how anonymous the race was around the city.
Yes it was. CART raced in Vancouver from 1990-2004 and this specific layout from 1997-2004. They ran a slightly different layout in the years prior, but it was changed due to rapid condominium development/gentrification of downtown. The same fate was met with this layout. There were debates and discussions about moving to an entirely new location in Vancouver, that ultimately fell through, with the race being moved over to Edmonton City airport from 2005. Much of the early debate of hosing the street race is chronicled in Mark Douglas Lowes' book, 'Indy Dreams and Urban Nightmares' Incidentally, it was recently announced that Formula E will race in Vancouver from 2022, on a layout strikingly similar to the one @PatientRF2fan is working on.
When you say Indycar, you could mean two separate entities. Most people probably lump all American open wheel racing under the banner of Indycar. But that actually only refers to the Indy Racing League. A made up effort to seize control from CART(Championship Auto Racing Teams) Which also raced under USAC and other regulatory banners over the years. So, the correct answer is no, Indycar did not race at Vancouver. CART did. However, since the family Coup removed Tony George from operating the IRL, the series has evolved back to almost a clone of CART and has become, once again, a more road racing centric series that have revisted many of the old CART circuits the IRL tried to wipe from it's racing calendar.
98 was the first year of the new layout then 99 they made the straight faster with a drift corner and added a chicane on the final turn. Great reference on the book I will have check it out
I was actually watching 96 97 video on that and will look to add. Having trouble finding any good aerial photos like google and may have to use video and photo reference. Looks like it can be done and what an active track on the crosswalks. I was considering remodelling bc place and gm place anyway and already have the loft shapes to do the 3 extra overpasses. Would be a nice little package with 3 unique layouts 97 98 99 and no permissions required since it is all new. and don’t even mention Edmonton, I’m from calgary the rival city lol.
I can totally see where all the walls curbs , chicanes and the start / pits are on a Google 2001. All the reference points are there and I will get some elevation data with the terrain capture plug. It doesn't do cities as well with all the high points but I can see with videos all the little rises are and the low point below gm place. I am just modelling and mapping many objects and then I just have to place. Then it's just making the two other layouts
I went to this race in 1998, came all the way from Kentucky. I was seated in between the 2 90 degree corners (far right in your track map).
