I suppose as we get older we reflect on stuff we missed. I am a child of the 80's (only spent 1 year in the 70's) and only watched F1 from around 1991 onwards. I have an appreciation for everything that came before. GP Legends probably fueled some of this game wise, then rFactor came along and generous folks made lots of mods for us to use!

I was trawling through rFactor 1 stuff I had probably missed and I found a little gem! A mod with cars this beautiful could not escape me!

Who needs modern F1 when you could have beauties likes this!!

    upload_2020-11-29_19-45-22.png

I did find a 1937 Auto Union mod (obviously from the very early days of rF2). The taste of no grip and lots of power and a thunderous engine up front is amazing!

Thank you to those mod makers bringing us mods that aren't just the over used GT3 or Touring cars.... simracing should be used to archive these beauties, no need for upkeep or fuel... just fire up that simrig and have a blast!!

With everything happening in the world today and things happening to us personally I am THANKFUL for those hobbyists that share their talent and bring us virtual automotive bliss!!

Understand the love. Every now and then I pull the 1937 mod out for a blast.

<cough> Assetto Corsa has some excellent old open-wheelers including Bugatti type 32 (though strictly speaking its wheels aren't open).

    Engine up front ? :D

I would also argue about the "no grip" part. IMO the old cars having no grip has become a little bit of mythical and legendary way of putting it. Obviously the older the tires were the worse they were. However, in case of 30s tires it shouldn't necessary mean that they had no grip, they were more limited by the durability. If we would observe old footage, we would see that they weren't sliding like on ice, they had perceivable limit of adhesion and shift into sliding with particular amount of sharpness, it didn't look like it was best way to go to slide all around the place in 1937 for best race performance.

In this footage that is showed in the very beginning it can be seen what probably was maximum of controllable drifting in 1937, I'd suppose such manouver would have been too risky in race, and too much for tires:

Here it is mentioned, that throttle steerign was adopted in 1938, at 16:50 of the video:

Garry has made incredible Auto-Union TypeC for AC, I have made Mercedes W125 for AC. Maybe some day those creations make will way to rF2. Maybe not. Who knows.

There is a mod for rF1 focusing on the 1955 F1 cars. The author has wondered if such a project porting that over to rF2 would interest rF2 users. Any thoughts? upload_2020-11-29_18-5-52.png

Hey Dave, that is all made by Bob (Punko353) back from the D3 Daytona trip (15 years ago already!). It really sucks as he was about a week away from releasing the F1 1955 mod for rF1 before a different mod of his was ripped off. He quit rF modding at that point, so it never was officially released.

That '58 mod is a work of art for rF1. I started an initial personal conversion of it a month or so ago. I asked for permission and basically it needs to be a perfect conversion for it to be released. That is something I just won't quite be able to do. Maybe some one with a bit more experience than me would be able to get the official approval

You are correct, that screenshot was sent to me via PunkoBob. I think he's starting to get the itch again. I'm not sure how current he is with the graphic updates, but if you would like to contact him, I'd be glad to be a go-between..

0.7-0.8G for the tires prior to 1958. Didn't reach 1.0G until the early/mid-60s. These days my Ford Focus ST on 200 treadwear street tires can pull 1.2+G and does 0.8G in the rain on 500 treadwear all-seasons.

The 1958 mod NEEEEEDS to come to rF2! It's one of the few rF1 mods that can distract me from rF2.
